New Massachusetts bill would allow inmates to donate organs for reduced sentences

Last Updated on February 10, 2023 10:10 PM CST

The Massachusetts HD.3822 bill filed on January 20 by State House Representatives Carlos González and Judith A. García would give inmates reduced time in exchange for their organs. Eligible individuals could have 60 to 365 days taken off of their sentences. If this bill passes, a five-person committee would be created to oversee the eligibility and implement the program. The committee would be comprised of officials from the Department of Corrections, an organ donation specialist from a state hospital, an advocate for organ donation, and an advocate for prisoner’s rights. This committee would also file annual reports on the number of organs donated and data associated with the lives saved using the donated organs.
