Howard University Elects Its First Transgender Student Body President

In late March, Howard students elected Jay Jones, a junior political science major from Fort Worth, Texas, as president of the Howard University Student Association for the 2024-2025 academic year. Despite starting her transition during her junior year, Jay’s advocacy for the queer community began earlier. With leadership as her refuge, she aimed not only to succeed but also to prevent others from facing the violence she endured. Supportive friendships, like with Samarion Montgomery, and mentors like Eshe Ukweli, played crucial roles in Jay’s journey. The election highlighted not only Jay’s historic presidency but also raised discussions about identity and representation. Jay’s plans include initiatives to strengthen community ties and provide support for incoming students. Ultimately, her campaign aims to empower marginalized individuals, especially those in the South, to embrace their identities and pursue their dreams.
