The American Cancer Society’s Cancer Statistics 2024 report has revealed that colorectal cancer is now the leading cause of cancer death in men under the age of 50 and second in women under 50 in the United States. While overall cancer deaths have continued to decline, some specific cancers, including colorectal cancer, have seen an increase in deaths. Factors contributing to the rise in colorectal cancer deaths in individuals under 50 may include changes in lifestyle, diet, sedentary behavior, obesity, overuse of antibiotics, and environmental exposures. The success of tobacco control and a large drop in lung cancer deaths is a contributing factor to why colorectal cancer deaths have increased in men and women under 50, according to lead author, Rebecca Siegel, MPHTrusted Source, Senior Scientific Director of Surveillance Research at the American Cancer Society.

Early screening, maintaining a healthy lifestyle, and addressing symptoms promptly are crucial for reducing the risk of colorectal cancer.
