22 states will be raising minimum wage on Jan. 1

Minimum-wage workers in 22 states will see pay increases in the new year, affecting approximately 9.9 million workers and resulting in an additional $6.95 billion in pay, according to the Economic Policy Institute. While 38 cities and counties will also raise their minimum wages above state minimums on January 1, 20 states will maintain the federal minimum wage of $7.25 an hour. The cost of living has risen significantly since the last federal minimum wage increase in 2009, impacting workers’ ability to cover essential expenses. The Raise the Wage Act of 2023, introduced by Senate Democrats, aims to gradually increase the federal minimum wage to $17 an hour by 2028.
