Black Sumter farmer goes viral and sends business booming

Samuel Martin and his granddaughter Zakaya Butler have gained attention on social media for their work on Martin Farms, a 149-acre farm owned by Martin located about 20 minutes from downtown Sumter. After Martin’s wife passed away, he wasn’t sure how he could keep up the work on his own and was wondering who could extend the invitation to help him. Butler, his 23-year-old granddaughter, stepped in a couple of weeks ago and has been helping run errands and with marketing. On her first day on the job, Butler posted a video on Facebook and TikTok, which went viral with over 500,000 views. As a result, Martin and Butler have been receiving numerous calls asking about their meat and fresh produce, and Martin has sold out almost all his products. They are now working hard to meet the new demand and have been getting closer in the process. They work six days a week together from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Martin plans to get a sign to make it easier for people coming to the farm to find it.
