Frozen strawberries sold at Costco, Trader Joe’s and Aldi recalled after hepatitis A infections

Frozen organic strawberries sold at Costco, Aldi, Trader Joe’s and other stores are being recalled after they were tied to an outbreak of hepatitis A infections in Washington state. The US Food and Drug Administration announced a warning for people to not eat, sell or serve certain brands of frozen organic strawberries after five people contracted hepatitis A after eating them; while two have been hospitalized. US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention investigators found in all five cases, the sick individuals ate strawberries sold by a common supplier. These strawberries from the supplier were imported from certain farms in Baja California, Mexico in 2022. The strain of hepatitis A is genetically identical to the outbreak strain from last year. In response, two suppliers have recalled frozen organic strawberries. Hepatitis A is a virus that attacks the liver and includes symptoms of fatigue, nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, yellowing of the skin or eyes, dark urine, and pale stool. The CDC and FDA advise that if you have any recalled strawberries to throw them away or return them to the store for a refund.
