Dr. Ashton Sellers, a Kansas City native, is making history as the first Black woman, and youngest woman at age 32, to own an animal hospital in the area. She recently took ownership of Hickman Mills Animal Hospital, a clinic that has served the community since 1957.
Sellers’ achievement reflects years of determination and a lifelong goal of working in veterinary medicine. As both owner and lead veterinarian, she now oversees all aspects of the clinic, embracing the responsibility of caring for patients, staff, and the business.
Her milestone is being celebrated during Women’s History Month, with community leaders recognizing her as an inspiration—especially for young Black girls pursuing careers in science, medicine, and entrepreneurship. Sellers hopes her journey sends a clear message: with determination, anything is possible.
