U.S. Army Private Travis King, who intentionally ran across the border into North Korea earlier this year, is now in U.S. custody in China. The return of Private King, 23, was secured by U.S. officials, with support from Sweden and China. King ran across the heavily armed border between North and South Korea on July 18 during a public tour of the demilitarized zone. North Korea had previously confirmed his detention and suggested he crossed the border due to disillusionment with the U.S. Army and societal issues in the United States. King’s return comes after weeks of diplomatic efforts. He will undergo post-isolation support activities to help him reacclimatize to being in the U.S. and deal with any trauma or post-traumatic stress.
