Twitter goes X-rated by allowing consensual porn on the platform

Pinch News

X, formerly known as Twitter, has officially updated its policies to permit the display of consensual adult content, as long as it is clearly labeled as such. This move formalizes a practice that was already in place before Elon Musk acquired the platform in 2022.

In a recent policy update on its website, X shared that users should be able to create, distribute, and consume material related to sexual themes, provided it is consensually produced and distributed. The company views sexual expression, whether visual or written, as a legitimate form of artistic expression. However, the platform has instituted measures to restrict adult content from being accessible to children and to adult users who prefer not to see it.

X’s policy explicitly prohibits content that promotes exploitation, nonconsent, objectification, sexualization, or harm to minors, as well as obscene behaviors. It also does not allow adult content to be displayed in highly visible places such as profile photos or banners.

This updated policy contrasts with those of other major social media platforms like Instagram and Facebook (owned by Meta), TikTok, and YouTube, which have stricter guidelines against nudity and sexual content. X’s new policy applies to both real and AI-generated material. The platform has asked users who regularly post adult content to adjust their media settings to place all such images and videos behind a content warning. This measure ensures that viewers must acknowledge their consent to view the content before it becomes visible.
