Trump says potential Greenland deal accepted by NATO chief

President Donald Trump announced on social media that “framework of a future deal” on Greenland. In his address at the World Economic Forum in Davos on Wednesday, the president said he would not use force to take over the Danish territory. This is an abrupt turnaround after weeks of increasingly aggressive threats of taking over the Arctic island.

“Based upon a very productive meeting that I have had with the Secretary General of NATO, Mark Rutte, we have formed the framework of a future deal with respect to Greenland and, in fact, the entire Arctic Region,” Trump said.

Trump did not explain what the deal entailed, only adding that “further information will be made available as discussions progress”. He said additional discussions were being held concerning the Golden Dome missile defense system “as it pertains to Greenland.” Vice President JD Vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Special Envoy Steve Witkoff will take on the negotiations.

Inspired by the Israeli defense system, the Golden Dome, is multi-layered defense system. It would form a collective web or “dome” of air defense via sensors and intercepting weapons meant to protect the United States from aerial foreign attacks.

Greenlandic Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen said he doesn’t know what is “concrete” in the deal, but that he’s ready to cooperate and have more talks “working on a solution for both parties.”

“We are ready to cooperate more in economics,” he says, “but that’s something we have to talk about in mutual respect”.
