The Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) agreed to a key strategic pact with ESPN that will bring basketball and football HBCU action to a broader audience on the worldwide leader in sports’ networks.
ESPN secured the rights to broadcast regular season and championship contests in both sports through the 2030-2031 academic year.

“The SWAC consistently delivers exciting competition, passionate fan engagement and some of the most anticipated championship events in HBCU athletics, said director of programming and acquisitions at ESPN, Mallory Kenny, in a statement. “The SWAC has been a valued teammate of ours since the launch of ESPNU in 2005, and we’re pleased to continue bringing the conference’s premier football and basketball events to fans across our networks and expanding the visibility of the student-athletes and programs that make the SWAC such a significant part of college sports.”

ESPN will air 10 regular season football games on ESPN networks or ESPN+, while the SWAC Football Championship is slated to air on one of ABC, ESPN or ESPN2.
“Our continued partnership with ESPN reflects the strength, tradition and national appeal of the Southwestern Athletic Conference,” said SWAC commissioner Dr. Charles McClelland in a statement. “This agreement ensures out student-athletes, coaches and member institutions will continue to receive premier national exposure while showcasing the excellene of SWAC football and basketball to audiences around the country.”
Postseason basketball will also be prominently featured, as the terms of the deal include that the SWAC Men’s Basketball Tournament Championship as well as the Women’s Balsketball Tournament championship both air on a linear ESPN network.
Additionally, four regular season men’s basketball games will also air on ESPN networks or ESPN+.
The deal also involves the SWAC and ESPN Events’ continued partnership in the MEAC/SWAC kickoff challenge game and the Celebration Bowl for six more seasons through 2032.
“The SWAC’s rich football heritage and passionate fan support have helped make the MEAC/SWAC Challenge Kickoff and Celebration Bowl two of the most anticipated events in HBCU sports,” said John T. Grant, who is the executive director of both events. “We are excited to continue showcasing the energy, tradition and excellence that define SWAC football over the next six years.”
This year’s challenge kickoff features Alabama A&M and Howard on August 29th on ESPN. The Celebration Bowl is scheduled for December 12th on ABC, which serves as the HBCU national title game between the champion of the SWAC and MEAC at Mercedes-Benz Stadium.
The contract between the SWAC and ESPN is an interesting decision in parallel with SWAC TV, which is a media offering the conference launched in the summer of 2025. SWAC TV and ESPN broadcasts should give HBCU football and basketball the most prominent platform it has ever had for fans.
Dr. McClelland said that SWAC TV had 58 million impressions during its first few months, and that it was easier to access than other platforms that HBCU sports might have aired on in the past.
The goal now appears to be to gain and connect casual HBCU sports fans, who perhaps will catch action on ESPN, over to SWAC TV during the remainder of the decade.
