South Korean opposition leader stabbed by attacker who asked for autograph

South Korea’s main opposition leader, Lee Jae-myung, was stabbed in the neck by an unidentified assailant during a visit to Busan. The attacker approached Lee, claiming to want an autograph, before stabbing him in the neck. Lee was airlifted to a Seoul hospital and underwent a two-hour operation.

The attacker, about 67 years old, was quickly subdued by Democratic Party officials. Lee’s party called it a “terrorist attack” and urged a swift investigation. Lee, who lost the 2022 presidential election to Yoon Suk Yeol, has been a vocal critic of Yoon’s policies. The motive for the attack is under investigation.
