On Wednesday, Samsung Electronics announced a new display technology called Flex Titanium, developed for the company’s next generation of Galaxy foldable smartphones. The announcement builds on seven prior generations of Samsung foldable devices and introduces structural changes aimed at improving durability and reducing crease visibility on the display. The core of the announcement centers on how Samsung is restructuring the internal components of its foldable displays. According to the company, previous foldable designs faced a persistent engineering tradeoff: materials strong enough to resist damage were often too stiff to fold repeatedly, while materials flexible enough to fold were more vulnerable to external impact.
Samsung’s Mobile R&D division says titanium was selected to address this tradeoff because of its combination of strength and workability, noting that the material is already used in demanding applications such as satellite antennas and rover components. Two titanium-based components make up the new structure:
- A titanium-alloy film that is positioned beneath the OLED panel, this component is intended to give the display more internal support without adding bulk.
- A titanium plate that is positioned beneath the film, this component supports the display module and uses a hole-processing technique to keep the folding section flexible.
Samsung executives said the redesign was informed by consumer feedback gathered across the company’s foldable product line, with users consistently citing crease visibility and long-term durability as key concerns. Sunghoon Moon, EVP and Senior Executive of Samsung’s Mobile R&D Office, said the company’s approach to foldables is rooted in translating user feedback into practical engineering improvements. Kyung-Jin Yoo, EVP and Head of Samsung Display’s Mobile Display Product Development Team, said the new titanium plate design allowed engineers to secure flexibility without giving up durability.
The company has not yet released full specifications, pricing, or a launch date, stating that additional details will be shared at its Galaxy Unpacked event. The event will be live-streamed on July 22 on Samsung.com, Samsung Newsroom and Samsung’s YouTube channel beginning at 2 p.m. BST, 9 a.m. EDT and 3 p.m. CEST.
