Few NFL players took their craft more seriously or intensely than Pro Football Hall of Famer Ray Lewis. He was the picture of focus and determination out on the field every Sunday, and he made sure that his Baltimore Ravens teammates were ready to stick by him through thick and thin for a full 60 minutes.
With Lewis’ passionate personality as a backdrop, graduating students at North Carolina Central University were treated to a speech by a commencement speaker who truly communicates from the heart.
“This is not the finish line,” Lewis told the graduates. “This is the doorway. See, I know what it feels like to stand at the edge of your future, and not know exactly what’s coming next.”

The school listed Lewis’ accomplishments on their website when they announced he would be the commencement speaker for the school’s 2026 graduating class.
The summary reads, “Today, Lewis is a New York Times best-selling author for his breakout memoir, “I Feel Like Going On.” Ray Lewis has been bringing his unique brand of inspiration and motivation to some of the world’s biggest companies and organizations for years. He speaks from the heart with passion and authority, drawing from a wealth of experiences on and off the field. With audiences, Lewis shares his lessons of leadership, working through adversity, motivating those around you, and inspiring the best in people.”
Lewis spoke about his early years and the choices he had to make on the way to success.
“I didn’t grow up with a clear path,” Lewis said. “I didn’t grow up with guarantees. I grew up in chaos.”
The former NFL linebacker continued, “I grew up trying to make it out of this. Somewhere along the way I realized something…nobody was coming to save me. Nobody was gonna wake me up, nobody was gonna push me, nobody was gonna build my life for me.”
Lewis brought it home by saying, “I had to make a decision, not about what I wanted to do, but who I wanted to be.”

Ray Lewis played 17 years in the NFL, all of which came with the Ravens. He’s the NFL’s career leader in solo and combined tackles, and is a two-time Super Bowl champion.
He won the league’s Defensive Player of the Year award twice, and was a seven-time first-team All-Pro selection.
The former NFL star had some sage advice that got laughs from the crowd that he felt were good words to live by.
“Pick up your phone before you leave here, and go down the last 10 numbers, and anybody you know asks you for something, wants you to go drink all night, go to the club and miss everything, delete their number child.”
Lewis punctuated the speech by asking for one thing from the graduates who were about to head into the world.
“Graduating class of 2026, go write your story.”
Lewis’ speech at North Carolina Central University lasted for around 13 minutes.
