Vladimir Putin has announced his candidacy in the Russian presidential election scheduled for March 17, 2024, seeking to extend his rule for another six years. Putin, who has been in power for nearly a quarter-century, enjoys widespread support despite the costly war in Ukraine and internal challenges. The announcement follows a short-lived rebellion by mercenary leader Yevgeny Prigozhin, leading to speculation about Putin’s grip on power. The war veteran and former president, who first took office in 2000, emphasized the need for his candidacy for the “survival” of Russia. Putin’s approval rating stands at around 80%, with limited opposition expected in the election. He has amended the constitution to potentially stay in power until his mid-80s and is already the longest-serving Kremlin leader since Josef Stalin. The war in Ukraine, initiated in February 2022, was seen by some as a strategy to consolidate support amid declining popularity. The conflict, however, has posed challenges and devolved into a prolonged and challenging engagement. The election will take place over three days, including in regions of Ukraine partially annexed by Russia. Putin’s announcement signals a continuation of his leadership in a system characterized by repression and corruption, as Russia remains isolated from the West.
