A heavy law enforcement presence and emergency crews responded to reports of a shooting Sunday afternoon at the Houston megachurch, Lakewood Church, run by celebrity pastor Joel Osteen. At least one person had been shot.
In a tweet on X, formerly known as Twitter, Lakewood Church said there was “an active situation involving shots fired” at the church.
“That is all the information we have at this time. Please pray for Lakewood and our community,” the church said in the post.
Jodi Silva, a Houston police spokeswoman, said officers were responding to the church but she did not have any additional information.
Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzales tweeted shortly after 3:30 local time that the shooter was down.
Correction: shooter is down. But it does not appear that @HCSOTexas deputies fired shots; other agencies fired. We continue to assist in a methodical/thorough search of the complex.

A Lakewood parishioner at the scene told CNN affiliate KPRC he was inside the church waiting for the Spanish language service to start when he heard multiple shots fired. The man was then instructed by a church usher to run, he told KPRC. The service was slated to begin at 3:00 p.m. ET, according to the church website.
