Marjorie Taylor Greene causes House committee chaos after insult

A House Oversight Committee meeting on Thursday, aimed at holding Attorney General Merrick Garland in contempt of Congress for not providing an audio recording of President Joe Biden’s interview with a special counsel, devolved into a heated argument between lawmakers. The altercation began with Georgia Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene insulting Texas Rep. Jasmine Crockett’s appearance, saying, “I think your fake eyelashes are messing up what you’re reading.”

Greene refused to apologize and further clashed with New York Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, who condemned her remarks. Oversight Committee Chair James Comer ruled Greene’s comments did not violate House rules, prompting Crockett to respond with a pointed remark about Greene. The direct remark consisted of Crockett asking “Just to better understand your ruling, if someone on this committee then starts talking about somebody’s bleach blonde, bad-built, butch body, that would not be engaging personalities, correct?”

The exchange disrupted the meeting for nearly an hour. Despite the chaos, the committee voted to recommend holding Garland in contempt, with the resolution needing approval from the full House.
