Many tattoo inks found to be contaminated with bacteria

The FDA has discovered that sealed bottles of tattoo and permanent makeup inks, including those labeled as sterile, contain harmful bacteria. The contaminated inks can cause severe infections and complications, such as endocarditis and septic shock, when injected into the skin. In a study of 75 samples from 14 manufacturers, 35% were found to have bacterial contamination, with some counts as high as 100,000 CFUs per gram. This highlights the urgent need for standardized manufacturing and sterilization processes in the tattoo ink industry to ensure consumer safety.

Tattoo artists and manufacturers are encouraged to implement advanced sterilization technologies and maintain rigorous quality control measures. In 2023, the FDA released draft guidance for the tattoo industry, aiming to establish regulations and good manufacturing practices. Artists have been recommended to conduct their own microbial testing and take steps to minimize contamination risks in their studios.
