The family of Robert Card, the Army reservist suspected in the Lewiston, Maine, mass shooting, had alerted police and military officials about his “acute” mental health episode before the incident, according to Card’s sister-in-law. Card, a firearms instructor and Army Reserve member, began experiencing hallucinations and paranoid beliefs. The family reached out to authorities, expressing concern about his mental state. Two senior law enforcement officials disclosed that Card’s military unit commanders had sent him for psychiatric treatment this summer due to concerns about threats and hearing voices. Card spent about two weeks in in-patient psychiatric treatment, but it is unclear what further actions were taken.
