Jackson State Captures First Celebration Bowl Victory with Dominant Win Over South Carolina State

Jackson State (12-2) secured its first Celebration Bowl championship and its first Black College National title since 1996 with a commanding 28-7 victory over South Carolina State (9-3) on Saturday at Mercedes-Benz Stadium. The Tigers’ performance was a showcase of physicality, discipline, and timely execution in front of 36,823 fans.

Mulligan’s Ground Game Sets the Tone

The game’s pivotal moment came on a third-and-goal play from just inside the two-yard line. Running back Irv Mulligan, a sixth-year senior, bulldozed his way into the end zone for his second touchdown of the game. The score, which capped a dominant 10-play, six-minute drive, put the Tigers ahead 21-0 in the fourth quarter and effectively sealed the game.

Mulligan’s determination symbolized Jackson State’s aggressive and physical approach. He finished the game with 75 yards on 25 carries, anchoring an offense that controlled the tempo from start to finish.

Defensive Stifling of SC State

South Carolina State’s high-powered offense, led by HBCU Player of the Year Eric Phoenix, struggled mightily. Phoenix, who had been the engine of the Bulldogs’ offense all season, completed just 9 of 21 passes for 114 yards and a rushing touchdown. He was benched at halftime in favor of backup Ryan Stubblefield but later returned as SC State’s offense continued to falter.

The Bulldogs, coming off a 23-day layoff, couldn’t find their rhythm against a relentless Jackson State defense that disrupted their passing game and stuffed their rushing attack.

Game-Changing Drive

One of the defining moments of the game came in the first quarter during a 19-play, 9:36 drive that exemplified Jackson State’s dominance. Despite an early fumble and a misfire by quarterback Jacobian Morgan, the Tigers converted a crucial fourth-and-1 at their own 41-yard line, with Mulligan powering forward for six yards. The drive culminated in a two-yard touchdown by Ermani Matthews, giving JSU a 7-0 lead.

Morgan, a transfer from Syracuse, played a crucial role, throwing for 219 yards, two touchdowns, and one interception. His connection with Joanes Fortilien, who caught two touchdown passes, provided a spark for the Tigers’ aerial attack.

Jackson State’s Historic Victory

The win marks a turning point for Jackson State, which had fallen short in its two previous Celebration Bowl appearances. Under the guidance of head coach T.C. Taylor, the Tigers showcased resilience and discipline, avoiding major mistakes despite early setbacks.
