House passes 45 day spending stopgap bill

In a last-minute reversal, the U.S. House of Representatives has voted 335 to 91 to approve a 45-day extension of federal funding, avoiding a government shutdown. The bill would extend authorization for the Federal Aviation Administration until the end of the year and include $16 billion in emergency disaster assistance. However, it does not include funds for Ukraine. The fate of the bill in the Senate remains uncertain, but the bipartisan support in the House increases pressure on senators to accept the stopgap measure and prevent a shutdown. House Speaker Kevin McCarthy called on both Republicans and Democrats to prioritize the American public’s interests over partisanship. As a result, McCarthy has opened himself up to be challenged for his gavel because, during his election in January, he agreed to allow only one lawmaker to file a “motion to vacate”. For days, Florida GOP Matt Gaetz has been hinting that he is planning to file a resolution to oust McCarthy.
