House Democrats on the Oversight Committee released several emails from Jeffrey Epstein on Wednesday, sparking immediate political controversy. The emails, part of a larger collection obtained from Epstein’s estate, include correspondence where Epstein made claims about his relationship with Donald Trump.

In one 2011 email to Ghislaine Maxwell, Epstein claimed Trump had “spent hours” at his house with a victim. In another 2019 email to author Michael Wolff, Epstein wrote that Trump “knew about the girls.” Other emails show Wolff and Epstein discussing potential PR strategies in 2015 regarding Trump’s anticipated-but-unasked questions about Epstein.

The White House and Republicans on the committee forcefully refuted the release. A White House spokesperson called the claims “slander” and a “hoax” intended as a distraction. They noted that Trump had kicked Epstein out of his club decades prior for his behavior.

Why did Democrats cover up the name when the Estate didn’t redact it in the redacted documents provided to the committee?

Republicans on the committee accused Democrats of “carelessly cherry-picking” documents to create a false narrative. They countered by releasing 20,000 pages of files from the Epstein estate, arguing Democrats were withholding records that might name other officials.

The White House identified the victim referenced in the email as Virginia Giuffre, who died by suicide in April. They pointed out that Giuffre wrote in her posthumous memoir that she met Trump once, he was “friendly,” and she did not accuse him of any wrongdoing.

Trump has consistently denied any wrongdoing in relation to Epstein, stating he had a falling-out with him years ago and wasn’t a “fan.”
