HBCU president touts fundraising boom on Bloomberg

Grambling State University is receiving national attention as President Dr. Martin Lemelle Jr. appeared on Bloomberg Businessweek to highlight the impact of HBCUs and the university’s continued momentum. During the interview, Lemelle discussed the transformative power of higher education, the importance of investing in HBCUs, and Grambling State’s role in preparing students for careers in business, technology, public service, and other industries.

The appearance marks another milestone for the university, which has experienced enrollment growth, formed strategic partnerships, and strengthened its focus on student success under Lemelle’s leadership. He emphasized that HBCUs remain essential contributors to the nation’s workforce and economy.

Grambling’s momentum extends beyond national recognition. The university recently celebrated a record-breaking fifth annual 1901 Day of Giving, raising more than $1.25 million from 859 donors nationwide and surpassing its $750,000 goal. The campaign became the most successful fundraising effort in the initiative’s history.

The university is also commemorating several major milestones, including 125 years of Grambling State University, 100 years of Tiger Athletics, and 100 years of the World-Famed Tiger Marching Band.

During the interview, Lemelle outlined a business-minded approach to higher education, stressing the importance of balancing affordability, academic quality, and financial sustainability. He said Grambling remains committed to helping students achieve social and economic mobility while maintaining one of the healthiest financial positions in the country.
