HBCU Launches Black History Month Tour in Nashville

Tennessee State University launched its first Black History Month tour to celebrate African Americans’ cultural contributions to Nashville. The tour included visits to the Fisk University Galleries, the National Museum of African American Music, and the Jefferson Street Sound Museum. Led by expert guides, TSU faculty, staff, and students traveled on a charter bus to explore African American artistic, musical, and historical impact.

Inspired by an employee orientation bus tour, Tonya Turner expanded the idea into a Black History Month event. Students found the experience enriching, especially the interactive exhibits and historical insights. The tour concluded at the Jefferson Street Sound Museum, leaving participants with a deeper appreciation for Nashville’s Black music scene. Attendees received TSU memorabilia as a token of the educational and empowering experience.
