FTC makes GoodRx notify customers about sharing their health information

GoodRx sent a notice to its users detailing allegations from the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) that the company shared sensitive health data with third parties for advertising purposes without receiving permission from its customers. GoodRx is an online and mobile app that offers telehealth visits and prescription drug coupons to users. In the notice, the company wrote the customer information shared included details about drugs, health conditions searched, and their prescription medication which they shared this information with third parties, including Facebook. They further specified that they use the information to “target people with health-related ads.” The timing of this week’s notification was specified in the FTC settlement which also included a $1.5 million civil penalty, agreeing to mandate third parties to delete consumer health data, and creating a “comprehensive privacy program.”
