Fred Hammond to Headline Gospel Explosion at 2026 Gulf Coast Challenge

Gospel legend Fred Hammond is set to open the 2026 Gulf Coast Challenge in Mobile, Alabama, headlining the Gospel Explosion on Thursday, Oct. 1.

The Grammy-winning artist anchors the opening night of what organizers call “The Ultimate HBCU Experience” — a multi-day celebration built around Jackson State vs. Alabama A&M at Lad-Peebles Stadium on Oct. 3.

The weekend goes well beyond football. Thursday also features a College and Career Fair drawing students from 35+ high schools across Alabama, Florida and Mississippi — giving the next generation a firsthand look at the HBCU experience. Friday brings the Team Luncheon and HBCU Fest, while Saturday’s Mardi Gras-style parade rolls through downtown Mobile ahead of the 4 p.m. kickoff.

Faith, culture, music and Black college pride, all in one weekend on the Gulf Coast.
