Five HBCU choirs compete for inaugural Stellar Awards recognition

The Stellar Gospel Music Awards is making history with the introduction of its first-ever HBCU Choir of the Year category, shining a national spotlight on the rich musical traditions and cultural impact of Historically Black Colleges and Universities. The inaugural honor recognizes five distinguished programs: Howard University, Morgan State University, North Carolina A&T State University, Southern University, and Fort Valley State University.

More than a competition, the category celebrates the faith, excellence, and community that have long defined HBCU gospel choirs. These ensembles serve as important spaces for mentorship, leadership development, spiritual growth, and cultural expression while representing their institutions on stages across the country.

Each nominee brings a legacy of musical excellence. Howard University’s Gospel Choir is known for its powerful performances and ministry through music, while Morgan State University’s Choir has earned international acclaim. North Carolina A&T’s Fellowship Gospel Choir plays a central role in campus life, Southern University’s Gospel Choir continues Baton Rouge’s gospel traditions, and Fort Valley State University’s Choir represents the strength of Georgia’s HBCU heritage.

Fort Valley State University’s Choir called the nomination “an incredible honor” and credited students, alumni, supporters, and voters for helping the ensemble reach the national stage. Several nominated projects also feature prominent guest artists, including Kierra Sheard Kelly and Damien Sneed.

The winner will be announced Aug. 15, 2026, during the 41st Annual Stellar Gospel Music Awards at Spectrum Center in Charlotte. Hosted by Kirk Franklin, the ceremony will be taped under the theme, “Feels Like Home.”
