The U.S. FDA has approved Opill, a nonprescription oral contraceptive, making it the first daily contraceptive available without a prescription in the United States. Opill provides an accessible option for consumers to purchase oral contraceptives from various retail outlets and online. The availability of nonprescription Opill aims to reduce barriers to access and help decrease unintended pregnancies. The contraceptive efficacy of Opill has been established, and studies have shown that consumers understand the drug labeling instructions. Opill should be taken daily at the same time for optimal effectiveness. It is not intended for use as emergency contraception or for protection against sexually transmitted diseases. The FDA granted approval to Laboratoire HRA Pharma, now owned by Perrigo Company plc.
