Elizabeth City State University recently announced the charter of the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary University Program. The program’s curriculum will offer a hands-on approach and allow participants to earn Coast Guard and Auxiliary qualifications. The program will also provide opportunities to obtain internships with active duty units.

Students will work alongside the Coast Guard’s active military in various areas, including business operations, information technology, geographic information systems (GIS), public policy, environmental response, and maritime strategy. The university hopes to provide well-trained candidates who can develop careers in the Coast Guard or a similar government agency. Chancellor Karrie G. Dixon stated, “The Auxiliary University Program allows us to further collaborate with the Coast Guard to provide our students with exciting career pathways and educational opportunities.” The program’s launch is a historic moment for Elizabeth City State, as it becomes the first historically black college to establish a Coast Guard Auxiliary chapter.
