Dr. Pepper has officially surpassed Pepsi to become the second most popular soda brand in America, according to a recent report by Beverage Digest, a trade publication. This significant shift was shared by the Wall Street Journal, marking the first time Pepsi has not held the number two spot since 1985.

The data from Beverage Digest shows that Dr. Pepper and Pepsi now both hold an 8.3% share of the soda market by volume. Despite this tie in market share, Dr. Pepper’s rising popularity and Pepsi’s declining trend over recent years have led to Dr. Pepper overtaking Pepsi. Since 1985, Coke has held the top spot and continues to dominate the market, maintaining its position as the top soda brand with a 19.2% market share last year.

Duane Stanford, editor of Beverage Digest, explained the dynamics of this shift to CNN, stating, “Dr Pepper has been gaining, [Pepsi] has been declining, and they’re meeting in the middle.”
