Dr. Maurice D. Gipson Named 15th President of Philander Smith University

Philander Smith University has officially appointed Dr. Maurice D. Gipson as its 15th president, ushering in a new era of leadership for the historic Little Rock-based HBCU.

The university’s Board of Trustees confirmed the appointment in May 2025, following Dr. Gipson’s service as interim president since August 2024. His selection, after a national search, signals the board’s confidence in his vision and ability to guide the institution forward.

Dr. Gipson brings extensive experience in higher education leadership, having previously served as Vice Chancellor for Inclusion, Diversity, and Equity at the University of Missouri, and holding administrative roles at Arkansas State University, the University of Texas at Austin, Wiley College, and Huston-Tillotson University.

A licensed attorney with both academic and legal expertise, Dr. Gipson earned a Ph.D. in history from the University of Mississippi, a Juris Doctor from Southern University Law Center, a master’s degree in history from Missouri State University, and a bachelor’s degree from Louisiana State University.

Dr. Gipson’s leadership arrives at a pivotal moment, as the university expands academic programs, strengthens community partnerships, and enhances student support. His expertise in diversity, equity, and inclusion aligns closely with the school’s core values and mission.

His transition from interim to permanent president brings stability after recent leadership changes and ensures continuity in key initiatives, including enrollment growth, faculty development, and campus improvements.
