Denmark’s Queen Margrethe II announces throne abdication

Queen Margrethe II of Denmark has announced her abdication during her traditional New Year’s Eve speech, citing age and health issues. The 83-year-old monarch, Europe’s longest-serving queen, will step down on January 14, and her son, Crown Prince Frederik, is set to become King. The decision has surprised many, as Margrethe had previously stated she would never abdicate. The queen has been widely supported by Danes and is known for modernizing the royal family while staying out of politics during her half-century reign. The prime minister thanked her for a lifelong dedication to duty.
