Delaware State University Achieves R2 Research Status

Delaware State University just hit a major milestone—it’s officially an R2 “High Research Activity” institution, as recognized in the 2025 Carnegie Classifications. This puts it among just 14 HBCUs with the prestigious designation, marking its growth in research and doctoral education.

The university’s research funding has skyrocketed, jumping from $17 million in 2017 to $45 million last year, and it produced over 40 doctoral graduates. President Tony Allen credited the achievement to strong leadership, dedicated faculty, and a push for interdisciplinary research.

This news comes alongside another historic moment—Howard University has become the first HBCU to reach R1 status, the highest level of research classification. Allen highlighted how organizations like the Thurgood Marshall College Fund and the President’s Board of Advisors on HBCUs have been pushing for more research funding to help HBCUs reach these heights.

With this recognition, Delaware State is solidifying its place as a leader in HBCU research and innovation.
