Deion Sanders set to hire Bengals assistant Robert Livingston as Colorado’s defensive coordinator

Pinch News

Deion Sanders, head coach of the Colorado football team, is set to appoint Robert Livingston, the Cincinnati Bengals’ secondary and safeties coach, as the new defensive coordinator for the Buffaloes in 2024. Livingston brings extensive experience from his nine seasons with the Bengals, where he served as the safeties coach for the past six years after three seasons as a scout for the franchise.

Livingston’s hiring would be the second time Sanders has brought in a coach with NFL experience during his tenure at Colorado. Previously, Sean Lewis, the head coach of Kent State, was hired as the team’s offensive coordinator in 2023. However, Sanders later assigned play-calling duties to former New York Giants coach Pat Shurmur mid-season, despite Lewis retaining the offensive coordinator title.

The change in offensive leadership did not significantly impact the team’s performance, as Colorado struggled to a 4-8 record for the season, including a 1-8 mark in Pac-12 play. The Buffaloes faced challenges on both sides of the ball, with issues in running the football, protecting the quarterback, and defending against opponents’ rushing attacks.

Livingston replaces Charles Kelly, who departed at the end of the 2023 season to join Auburn’s defensive staff after a brief stint at Colorado. Shurmur will continue as the offensive coordinator for the Buffaloes in 2024, as Lewis has taken on the head coaching role at San Diego State.

As Colorado transitions back to the Big 12 conference, efforts are underway to bolster the team’s offensive line through the transfer portal. Shedeur Sanders, the Buffaloes’ quarterback, faced numerous sacks during the 2023 season, impacting his productivity and leading to concerns about injuries.
