Community vocalizes concerns and consistent issues at Thorntown Township budget meeting

Tensions erupted at a Thornton Township budget meeting due to the presence of Dolton Mayor and Township Supervisor Tiffany Henyard. Residents, frustrated with public spending and potential tax increases, voiced their concerns loudly, prompting police to be on standby. The May 31 meeting, scheduled for 1:30 pm, was rescheduled after the supervisor announced a “lack of quorum” on May 28, and after leaving the public waiting for over half an hour for the scheduled meeting to occur.

Henyard, earning $224,000 annually, faces multiple lawsuits and an FBI investigation. She previously passed an ordinance that would drop her successor’s salary to $25,000 if they win in the 2025 re-election. In 2021, Forbes reported the salary as one of the highest local government salaries within the state of Illinois. The current supervisor’s salary has been listed as a higher salary than 49 of 50 US state governors including the Illinois state governor.

However, the ordinance to reduce the supervisor’s salary upon Henyard’s potential re-election defeat in 2025 could be overturned by new legislation passed in Springfield, which would stabilize supervisor salaries in Cook County. Bill 4488 would prohibit a township from decreasing salaries for a person elected as the supervisor while maintaining the salary of an incumbent. Although the legislation has passed in both houses of the Illinois legislature, it currently awaits the signature of Gov. J.B. Pritzker to become law.

Thornton Township, the state’s largest, includes 17 suburban communities with around 185,000 residents.
