The Chinese military has conducted drills around Taiwan, labeling them a “stern warning” against what it perceives as collusion between “separatists and foreign forces.” This comes shortly after Taiwan’s Vice President, William Lai, visited Paraguay and made stops in the US, which China strongly disapproves of due to its claim of Taiwan as part of its territory. The Chinese drills involved the coordination of vessels and planes and aimed to test their “actual combat capabilities.” China’s military sees this exercise as a warning against provocations from pro-Taiwan independence forces and foreign powers. Taiwan’s defense ministry responded by detecting and closely monitoring Chinese military aircraft and vessels and strongly condemning what it referred to as “irrational, provocative moves.” The tensions between China and Taiwan remain high due to their historical split and conflicting claims.
