A body was found stuck in a barrier of buoys installed by Texas authorities in the Rio Grande river, which straddles the U.S.-Mexico border. The Texan government installed the barrier last month to deter illegal immigrants attempting to cross into Texas. Mexico’s foreign ministry expressed concerns over the barrier’s impact on migrants’ human rights and personal security. The Texas Department of Public Safety stated that the victim appeared to have drowned upstream and drifted into the buoys. A second unidentified body was also found in the river. Mexico has sent letters to the U.S. claiming the barrier violates a water treaty and may encroach on Mexican territory. The U.S. Justice Department filed a lawsuit to remove the barrier, citing threats to navigation and public safety.
