Bloomberg Philanthropies Donates $600M to Bolster Nation’s Four HBCU Medical Schools

Bloomberg Philanthropies has announced a $600 million donation to strengthen the endowments of the nation’s four historically Black medical schools: Charles R. Drew University of Medicine & Science, Howard University College of Medicine, Meharry Medical College, and Morehouse School of Medicine. The funding will support these institutions’ efforts to diversify the medical field and train future Black doctors, addressing racial health disparities. This investment is part of Bloomberg’s Greenwood Initiative, which aims to advance racial wealth equity by combating systemic underinvestment in Black institutions.

The funding allocations include $175 million each to Howard, Meharry, and Morehouse, $75 million to Charles R. Drew University, and $5 million to the new Xavier Ochsner College of Medicine in New Orleans. This donation is expected to more than double the endowments of three of the four schools. The gift also builds on previous contributions by Bloomberg Philanthropies, including a $100 million donation in 2020 that helped reduce student debt for nearly 1,000 future Black doctors.

The initiative acknowledges that Black patients have better health outcomes when treated by Black physicians, highlighting the need to increase the number of Black doctors, who currently make up a small percentage of the medical workforce. The donation is seen as a transformative investment that will enhance the schools’ abilities to educate diverse healthcare professionals and contribute to health equity and social justice.
