4 HBCUs Come Together To Launch Groundbreaking Digital Learning Platform

Four Historically Black Colleges and Universities are joining forces to expand access to online education through the launch of the eHBCU Consortium Portal, a new digital learning platform designed to bring the HBCU experience to students beyond traditional campus settings.

The initiative is led by Delaware State University, Southern University and A&M College, Alabama State University and Pensole Lewis College of Business & Design in Detroit, the nation’s first HBCU focused on design. The platform currently offers more than 33 degree and certificate programs, combining rigorous academics with mentorship, career preparation and opportunities to build professional networks.

The idea originated during the COVID-19 pandemic, when many HBCU students faced challenges as colleges rapidly transitioned to online learning. The institutions saw an opportunity to create a collaborative model that would allow students to access courses and educational experiences from multiple HBCUs while remaining connected to the culture and community those institutions provide.

The platform is open not only to current HBCU students, but also to alumni and people who have never attended an HBCU. Organizers hope the consortium will eventually expand to include more institutions and reach learners nationwide.

Pensole Lewis College is using the platform to provide students with specialized training for creative careers, including personal branding, digital marketing, social media, website development and professional networking. Students also receive individual and group mentoring from industry professionals.

The eHBCU Consortium Portal represents a new approach to collaboration among HBCUs, using technology to expand educational opportunities while helping students develop the academic, professional and interpersonal skills needed to succeed after graduation.
